Battery Park in Lower Manhattan

Battery Park in Lower Manhattan

At the very bottom of Manhattan is Battery Park (Manhattan's green toe),
a wonderful waterside haven with gardens, playgrounds, a one-mile walkway, public art and views of the Hudson River. (Today, however, we almost froze to death having our picture taken!)

When Dutch settlers landed here in “New Amsterdam” in 1623, the area was given its name because a “battery of canons” was set up there to defend the new city against the French.

Battery Park has fine views of Governor's Island, Staten Island, the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island and Ellis Island, the famous immigrant gateway to America for ancestors of one in four present-day Americans. Frequent ferry service to Staten Island, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty departs from South Ferry and Battery Park. We'll definitely come back to this wonderful place in Spring when our warm-weather visitors arrive to visit the Big Apple!

Aren't you just dying to come for a visit?

Yes I would love to come! Hi, this is Kaylee Pence your long lost once upon a time piano student! I actually went to New York last spring and remember that park! I went with our choir, which included Erick. It was really fun. I will never forget seeing the temple and all of my non-member friends inquiring after it! Thanks for all the updates! I am at BYU and doing very well. Sounds so fun!

Oh, Kaylee Pence, you wonderful piano player! How I miss you...and all six of your marvelous, gifted siblings! I bet you use your piano skills so much.

So happy you and Erick got to this beautiful park in the spring of the year when it was warmer than "arctic ice!"

Isn't the temple just magnificant? Good you could do a little PR work among your friends. What a girl! I love you so much. Tell your family hello.

A little more history to boot: About the same time the Dutch were coming to New York, Dutch Jews went down to Northeastern Brazil and settled what they called New Holland. I am actually a descendant of those settlers --- can you tell? :-D Then in the 1650's they were kicked out of the country by the Portuguese, and decided to move up North. To complete their adventure, on their way north they were captured by pirates in the Caribbean but were later released. They finally made it to New Amsterdam and were probably the first New York Jews! Brazilian Dutch Jews! So I had to find that synagogue by the United Nations Building and take a picture of it!
